Hunter x Hunter began serialization in 1998 and has become the Shonen genre’s staple ever since. Having sold over 85 million copies worldwide, Yoshihiro Togashi has created a gem and it isn’t his first at that either, Togashi is also the mangaka of the famous 90s series Yu Yu Hakusho.

1. Dororo
Dororo is a series as old as time, the manga started way back in 1967. It was later re-animated by MAPPA and what a fantastic job they’ve done at that. The story follows a banished prince named Hyakkimaru.
This boy suffered a terrible fate at the hands of his father, Daigo Kagemitsu, who sacrificed Hyakkimaru’s body to demons in exchange for prosperity in his Kingdom. Hyakkimaru then makes it his life’s goal to regain all of his organs and vanquish the demons.
The only thing holding him back from turning into a ruthless demon himself is a little boy named Dororo. Cruel, emotional, and filled with action. Dororo is a must-watch for anyone who likes Hunter x Hunter.
- The series, animated by the highly acclaimed studio MAPPA and has a total of 24 episodes
- Dororo manga has adaptions before the 2019 version as well. The first version was released in 1969 with the same name. A live-action movie was also released in 2007.
2. Gintama
Gintama is not an anime in the comedy genre, it IS comedy itself. I’ll make it short so that you can watch the anime immediately!! Dating back to the Edo era in Japan, Aliens have contacted and even worse, invaded Japan.
These Aliens now control the government and have banished swords and Samurais.
In these difficult times, a silver-haired, wooden sword-wielding former Samurai Sakata Gintoki owns an Odd-Jobs shop. In the Yorozuya (Odd Jobs), you can run any errands you want, for a fee.
Whether that task will be fulfilled or fail spectacularly, depends upon Gintoki and his henchmen Shinpachi and Kagura alone. Full of comedy, action, and a knack for making parodies of all other anime, Gintama is highly recommended to all anime enthusiasts.
- Gintama is animated by Sunrise Studios with the original release dating back to April 4, 2006- March 25, 2010.

3. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 3: Stardust Crusaders
Up next on our list of Top 5 Anime like Hunter x Hunter, we have JJBA: Part 3. While the entire JoJo series is just as enjoyable and Bizarre as the other, the third part featuring Jotaro is certainly the breaking point for the franchise. 17-year-old Jotaro Kujo has gained a bizarre new power, an external entity called a Stand.
And it’s not just him, his grandfather and our favorite Joseph Joestar have gained this ability as well. So has Holly Joestar, but unlike those two, she isn’t mentally strong enough to control her stand and is, in fact, dying due to it.
To save his mother, Jotaro sets off to end this farce by killing Dio Brando, the family enemy and the primary antagonist of the entire franchise. This part, in particular, has a lot of action scenes and adventure, along with multiple memorable moments, and any HxH fan will love Stardust Crusaders.
- David Productions animate the entire series. The astounding music and the appropriate use of 3D make David’s Production stand out.
- Stardust Crusaders is divided into two parts and has a total of 48 episodes.
4. Mob Psycho 100
Having the same mangaka as One Punch Man, a lot was expected from Mob Psycho 100 and this ONE creation certainly did live up to those standards. Mob Psycho still does not get the recognition it deserves.
Shigeo Kageyama is a high-school student with telepathic powers. He uses those powers for the greater good by helping out another telepath Arataka Reigen (he looks like Great Teacher Onizuka).
Reigen-San also mentors Shigeo, or Mob, in various walks of life. This slice-of-life series is not as wholesome as it sounds as we get an in-depth view of the life of a high school student who can wipe away an entire town if he wants to.
Career, love, relationships, and an army of evil telepaths, will Shigeo be able to balance these things out? Or will he turn to the dark side and become 100%? There’s only one way to find out.
- Famous Studio Bones has animated Mob Psycho 100. Some other famous Bones works include FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and My Hero Academia.

5. Devilman: Crybaby
This series is 18+. Viewer discretion is advised. Let me be clear, this series is not for everyone, if you consider yourself brave, try sitting through 10 minutes of the show without gasping.
Akira, our main character is convinced by his best friend that demonic beings have returned to Earth and seek to kill humans.
Akira’s friend also convinces him to convert into a Devil himself, so that he can protect himself. After converting into the thing he fears, Akira still has his consciousness as a Human and this leads to him fighting a war within himself and he has to decide what is right or wrong.
Amidst this battle, he also has to find a way to protect half-humans like himself from the danger that awaits… If the action was the driving factor for you watching Hunter x Hunter, then you are going to enjoy this show a lot.
